OFF-DUTY STRIPES

Happy weekend everyone! We had a serious storm in CT yesterday. It was a mix of snowy rain that lasted long into the evening and the wind was CRAZY! The skylight in our kitchen is leaking and we had to cover it with a tarp while we wait for the replacement to arrive/be installed. I was so scared it was going to blow away and the leak would get worse! Driving around today we're so lucky we didn't lose power.

You might remember this sweater from a look I posted a couple of weeks ago. As a stylist, I always want to make sure that the pieces I'm suggesting to my clients are versatile and can be worn back to many different outfits. I love a pretty striped sweater for this reason...pair it with your favorite blue jeans or dress it up tucked into a navy silk midi skirt like this one. Also if you're looking for a new field jacket like the one in this post I found this one for under $59....a STEAL!!!

CASUAL WORK WEAR EDIT

stephanietrotta-thegirlguide.jpg

SHOP THE POST

Last month I asked my readers what what they wanted to see more of on the blog and so many of you asked for outfit ideas for work. There are a hundred ways to break this one down but I decided to start with a casual office look because I believe it can be the most challenging. Lets break it down: you don't have to wear a suit, but you need to look professional, no denim (ignore that I'm wearing black jeans in these pics!), and you want to look sophisticated and chic all the while not wearing anything too revealing. Like I said, its a challenge! I always tell my husband he has it so easy - casual for the guys means a nice pair of khakis or dress paints and a button down or a nice sweater. Hi answer is always that his options are boring at which point I have to agree.

So I've rounded up options for every budget and my advice is to make investments on timeless pieces that you can wear over and over again...like this twist on a classic and this ivory silk blouse.  High/low dressing is at its finest in the office and mixing a Mango pant with a pair of investment pumps is the perfect solution to creating 6 months worth of outfits on a limited budget. Also this silk bow blouse is perfect and a must for any working girl. I love it because you can throw it on with a pair of jeans after work and head out for a date night. Lastly, if you're going to splurge on prints go for plaid!

HOW I GOT INTO BLOGGING + UPDATE YOUR WARDROBE

stephanietrotta-thegirlguide.jpg

GET MY LOOK

Hi friends! You may have seen bloggers posting their 5 things you may not know about me over the last couple weeks. Personally I loved learning more about the ladies I follow and after I did it on my Instagram stories I realized there was an opportunity to share these things with my blog readers as well. I receive a lot of questions on Instagram about how and why I started my blog so I wanted to share that too!

I officially started my blog in January of 2011 (see archives!). Frank and I were dating and living together in New York and I was working for Ralph Lauren. I loved it! At the time many of today's biggest bloggers were just starting out...my favorites were Man Repeller and Atlantic Pacific. For 9 months I blogged almost everyday! Looking back some months there were 32 posts! I can't even imagine that today. People ask me why I stopped and I laugh out loud (at myself) - I felt like I was too busy! I guess its all relative but I had a fast paced job, a boyfriend, and a social life and it just felt like I couldn't keep up. The follow up question I always get is "do you regret it?" and my answer is no. Seven years later I love the perspective that I have. I've been working in the fashion industry for almost a decade and I have a passion today that I don't think I had then. The funny thing is now I REALLY have no time! But I also really love what I do and I want it. Kids or no kids you have to love having a blog, creating content, styling, etc. because the hours are long and the majority of the time its not glamourous. So here we are today - The Girl Guide is my third baby, my creative outlet, and my passion poured into pictures and posts. I think its also important to say that my favorite part of blogging is YOU! The readers...I live for your feedback, commentary, suggestions, and questions...so keep them coming!

PRETTY PINK COAT + THE SEASON'S ULTIMATE HANDBAGS

STEPHANIETROTTA-THEGIRLGUIDE.jpg
stephanietrotta-thegirlguide.jpg

Happy Friday! I'm so excited that I'm able to get three posts up this week! Its finally starting to feel like I'm getting into a groove after all the holiday madnes and I love it. This outfit is one of my favorites! Individually, every piece is versatile and together they represent my style and a whole: classic striped sweater, chic reversible coat in the prettiest blush pink and grey, cool ripped jeans, and a statement bag (in grey!). Also these Chloe heels are probably my favorite pair of shoes that I own. I thought about buying them forever because they weren't inexpensive, but they are so comfortable and I love that they give me a little extra height.

So now on to the topic of handbags. NYFW just wrapped up and there are so many new styles out there. It can be hard to commit to a new handbag especially if you're investing in one and are not someone who changes your bag often. My top pick for the season has to be this one. The shape is something I've never seen before, I love that it can be worn on your shoulder or cross-body, and the colors they're offering are so unique. Check out this one and this one too. Also, stylist tip, the cost of these bags is sure to go up by next year and their under 1k price tag is only based on the brands newness.

SO I've rounded up some of my favorites for the season below: Spulrge, Steal, Under $500, and for the beach. A happy holiday weekend to all!

Hi friends! Hope you're all having a good start to your week. Yesterday was definitely a Monday for me! We had such a nice weekend with family and friends and I never wanted it to end! Harrison is starting to do the funniest things and is becoming a person before our eyes...its magical and I'm trying so hard to soak up every minute and not take any of it for granted.

I've been looking at this jacket for a while. The price is great for leather and I love the color because it works year round. Also it looks great with any color denim..white, light, or dark...even black! Thats not something you can say about most jackets. I can't wait to pair it with a floral maxi dress or a white one (just ordered this and love it!).

I was SO excited when I found this camisole. It looks like it would be a splurge and was just the color I was looking for. I'm thinking about getting the black too for date night with layered gold necklaces and black denim. I know I'm going to get a lot of use out of both colors this summer. If you looking for a silk version THIS one has been my favorite for years!

Stylist tip: Here's an insider tip on refreshing a leather jacket since you can't throw it in the wash. Inside it out, throw it in a ziplock bag, seal it, and put it in the freezer for 24-48 hrs. I do this to my leather pants all the time and it really works!

MODEL OFF DUTY

JuliaDags_StephanieJan.18-28.jpg

I'm a big fan of the athleisure look for two reasons: 1. It's comfortable. Who doesn't want to live in sneakers and cashmere sweats? 2. It's elevated the "off duty" look and pushed brands to create more stylish options i.e. sneakers and loungewear. You can invest in a pair of sneakers like these (I own them and after 3 years can attest to their comfort!) and throw them on with jeans and a cozy sweater and you're good to go any day of the week. I also love this pair on sale. If you only want to purchase one pair of sneakers this year for the gym and beyond, I found this pair which has a color palette that lends itself to both looks (and UNDER $50!!).

Recently I've been stepping it up a notch and wearing my sneakers with leather leggings. The ones I'm wearing are old but I found this similar (lighter) pair and also this budget friendly vegan pair (I haven't tried these yet but they've become a favorite amongst bloggers this year). Updating my new year's resolution: wear comfortable shoes, i.e. sneakers at least three days a week!

I'm addicted to neutrals. I don't know when it started really...I did wear color in college? And I used to wear more black...but somewhere along the way my love for a monochromatic and tonal look became my obsession. If I had to guess, growing up and going to Belgium every summer may have had something to do with it. From the youngest age I remember appreciating the white oak wide plank floors, natural linen fabrics, and grey stone accents. I've always associated home with this palette - its my comfort zone.

As a stylist my biggest challenge is stepping out of it sometimes. I started this blog not only as a creative outlet but as a place to share my style. It has been SO helpful when it comes to identifying a client's desired look and I love the challenge.  My jacket in these pics is old. It was a splurge purchase when I worked for Ralph Lauren but I knew it would go with everything and the quality is great. I found a similar color jacket here and a steal version here. I rounded up some of my favorite neutrals below. My jeans are old from Zara but I also linked a few available styles. You can't go wrong with winter white denim. I have a splurge pair and less expensive version because I wear them so often...but you can't go wrong with purchasing THESE!

PS these are the most comfortable boots I've ever worn. I love that I can slip them on hands free which is the best when I'm running out the door bag in one hand baby in the other!

Staying Healthy During The Winter

JuliaDags_StephanieJan.18-169.jpg

SHOP MY LOOK

If you were to ask my family they would all probably agree that I'm a borderline hypocondriac. There, I said it! When I was about seven years old and we were traveling home from the Caribbean I got really sick on the plane and I think it scarred me! Ever since I've been obsessed with trying not to get sick, washing my hands before meals (especially in the winter) and sanitizing (I only used natural based ones but more on that later). Pregnancy kicked my fear into overdrive but now with two boys and little time to obsess over it, I feel like I've developed a good routine. Some of you have asked me what I do to boost my immunity and for natural solutions to staying healthy during cold a flu season. The flu seems to be worse than ever this year and not even the flu shot is 100% effective but I've found that these things have helped me:

I truly believe in the statement you are what you eat (drink) and that a good diet contributes to your immunity. During the winter I religiously drink a mixture of warm water, apple cider vinegar, ginger, lemon and honey. Alone, each one of these ingredients are beneficial but mixed together its a powerhouse immunity booster. Check out this article from GOOP and read more on the amazing benefits of ginger!

Sambucus I use this three times a day at the slightest sign of an itchy throat or runny nose. Also if I'm feeling rundown and more vulnerable. The rest of the year I take it once a day. They also make a syrup for kids as well as lozenges.

Wash Hands This is obvious I know but don't underestimate the power of soap and water. My sister is a nurse practitioner and recommends washing your hands for a period of one "happy birthday" song or the ABC's - I have Luke sing them to himself and it works! If you don't have access to soap and water I love this sanitizer. The ingredients are all natural and its free of synthetic detergents and preservatives. PS washing my hands all the time makes them super dry. Loving this hand cream lately!

Sleep I am NOT a morning person. It sounds crazy to say, especially for moms with young kids, but I can't operate on less than 7 hours of sleep. We've been really lucky that our boys are good sleepers and consistently clock out for an average of 12 hours a night. I have so much admiration for moms whose children wake up at 5:15am and start their day...I couldn't do it! No magical advice here - but I try to plan two nights a

Green Juices With a busy schedule it can be so tough to make sure I'm getting the right greens every day. I almost always have a salad for lunch but I need more and its not always guaranteed in my dinner. Drinking a green juice with ginger or lemon a couple times a week is so helpful. If you're local my go-to's are Green and Tonic in and Meli Melo.

THE WRAP COAT

JuliaDags_StephanieJan.8-50.jpg
JuliaDags_StephanieTrotta-TheGirlGuide.jpg

For some reason right after the holidays I always have this feeling that the end of winter and cold is right around the corner. I think its because in my mind I associate snow with Christmas? Anyone else? Basically what I'm trying to say is I keep going outside sans socks and with only two layers on hoping it will be over 30 degrees and I'm freezing!...maybe its the iced tea in my hands:)

I have been eyeing THIS jacket since October. I love it because it was an outerwear color I was missing in my wardrobe (I know you're probably shocked by this hehe) and the style was perfect for both a day outfit and at night. Also the exaggerated lapels give it a lux feeling and reminded me of a coat that walked the Ralph Lauren runway. Sooo when it went on sale I had to get it! This is one of my favorite sites and right now their sale is up to 70% off. Important note on their sizing: I've found that everything runs on the bigger side. If you order the small for example the tag says medium so order either one or two sizes down. I'm wearing a small but should have bought the XS!

I also get a lot of questions about these booties when I wear them. I purchased them about 8 years ago and they're still very much in style which I love. If you like this look I also found this similar pair for under $150! AND on the boot front I've been receiving a lot of requests for my favorite winter boots. So many of the styles I loved are sold out but I rounded up my top picks below:)

EVERYDAY GREY

JuliaDags_StephanieTrotta-TheGirlGuide.jpg
JuliaDags_StephanieTrotta-TheGirlGuide.jpg

I hope everyone is having a great week! I for one can't believe its already Wednesday. I've been trying to get this post up for two days but between work and recuperating from last weekends festivities I've been just a tad behind:)

Ok so if I had to describe my style with one outfit THIS WOULD BE IT! A casual chic look that works day or night and is drum roll please....50 shades of GREY! I love this jacket because its a cool twist on the classic Chanel one and still has that Parisian model off duty vibe. I purchased this one 3 or 4 years ago and I love the fact that they're still making variations of the same style. I actually use it all the time in the spring and early Fall but recently I've been layering it under my down coats and leaving it on when I get to my destination (lunch with a friend, dinner, etc.). It was definitely a spurge when I purchased it but I'm so happy I did! I found this one if you're looking for a steal version and also this version for under $100.

If you're wondering what to pair this style jacket with I always like to suggest a white or black t-shirt for a relaxed look. It also looks great paired back to a high low silk blouse or tunic and leather leggings if you want to dress it up.

What do you wear from January to March? My go-to is the sweater dress. I like to layer underneath mine with a thermal or waffle knit fitted shirt and a pair of leggings or skinny jeans. Its the perfect look for cold winter months when you want to stay warm but still look dressed. My go-to for dinner dates and luncheons has been this one recently (I purchased it during the friends and family sale but it was definitely still a splurge!). If you're looking for good underpinnings my go-to's are this fitted turtleneck and this one. Also I love this style - and they're ALL on sale!!

Happy New Year! Today feels like a clean slate, a fresh start, and I'm so excited for what lies ahead in 2018! Grateful is an understatement for how I've felt the last 8 months to have this as a creative outlet and a platform to share my thoughts, style, and life with you. Thank you for all your emails, DM's, likes, and comments...they mean the world to me!

I'm a huge fan of the military jacket. I always suggest to clients that they pick up this staple when I'm doing a closet re-organizathion or putting together outfits. Army green works on every skin tone and can also be worn with all colors. I purchased this one last year and wore it into the summer with white jeans or over a dress. These days I'm layering it under outerwear or a fur vest (behind the scenes: I was FA-REEEEZING shooting this - I think it was 13 degrees out!). PS the boots I'm wearing are so comfortable and if it would just stop snowing I could go back to wearing them every day!

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

TheGirlGuide-stephanietrotta-LindsayMaddenPhotography-7.jpg

SHOP THE POST

Motherhood is easy (said no one ever)! It isn't easy but it is a journey that for me, has changed my life in the best way possible. On January 2nd it will be three years since my sweet Luke made me a mom...a day I will never forget. Since then, motherhood has been a string of decisions...thousands of them. In the beginning it was, "Can he sleep like that, Should we feed him that?, Can we take him there?" now the questions are bigger like "Did I say the right thing? and How do I explain that?" Sometimes my work schedule gives me only one to two hours a day with the kids and its never uninterrupted. I'm always asking myself, "How can I get more time?", and then the mom guilt sets in. Last week I started to make a list of goals - all the things I wanted to accomplish in 2018. I looked at it and realized they were ALL work related! Which brought me to my New Year's resolution....

BE PRESENT - It sounds so simple but for me (if I'm being honest with myself) its not. Since Harrison was born in May I've been on my phone and or my computer A LOT. Like seriously a lot. I re-launced my blog last February at 6 months pregnant and really kicked it into high gear in June when H was only one month old. It was a huge undertaking with a newborn, a 2.5 year old, and a full-time job waiting for me to return in two months but I was determined to make it work. Every time I shoed Luke away for "work" I would tell myself I was doing it for him. That I was working this hard to create a job and a lifestyle that would one day equal more flexible hours and more time with my babies. That was all true BUT reflecting on the last 7 months, I'm realizing that I need a better balance, personally, and for my family. Now as any mom knows, there is not exact science to the work/kids/husband/self ratio but I've committed to prioritizing family time in the New Year and it feels good! What are your New Year's resolutions?

MY SKINCARE ROUTINE

TheGirlGuide-stephanietrotta-organachs-LindsayMaddenPhotography-7.jpg

Lately I've been getting a ton of emails and messages on social media asking about my skincare routine. The most important thing for me has been understanding the type of skin that I have. Growing up (especially in my teens) I suffered from acne and breakouts. In college I actually tried products like Proactive and I found myself managing blackheads and clogged pores on a daily basis. On the flip side my sister's skin? You could not find a pore on her face! She's always suffered from eczema and dry skin though. Genetics!

In the last couple of years I feel like I finally have a good handle on my skin. I credit most of my success to consistency and using natural or organic products. I started a very basic nightly routine about ten years ago and have been diligent over the years. I first posted about this topic here after I had Harrison. I loved the products I was using but still felt like something was missing. Then I discovered Organachs Farm to Skin in Westport, CT. I've finally found the place I was always looking for - a natural and organic destination for skincare and makeup. Immediately I connected with owner and curator Siobhan McKinley over her passion and love for natural products. She believes, as I do, that what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it. Here are the products I love from Organachs and some of my skincare tips:

  • Voya Even Pure Moisturizer - The thing I like most about this moisturizer is you can wear it day and night. I like to keep my routine simple and with this you don't have to have a night cream. In the mornings I use it solo (unless my skin is very dry) and at night after my face oil.
  • May Lindstrom Honey Mud - I've been using this for about a month now and I'm HOOKED! I use it as a cleanser during the week as well as a mask once a week. It is purifying, smells amazing, and consistency is something you would want to eat!
  • Ursa Major Deodorant - I'm constantly on the hunt for a natural deodorant and this one works! No aluminum or harsh metals and it smells really fresh.

Be Diligent at Night: Remove your Makeup! You're exhausted, its been a long day at work or with the kids and the last thing you want to spend time on is washing, toning, and applying a face oil or night cream. But I PROMISE! You will thank yourself in the morning!

Get Oily: I'm an oil addict. Applying oil to your oily t-zone may seem counterintuitive but actually if you are cleansing and exfoliating your skin properly, oils can clarify and offer your skin many nutrients its needs. I LOVE this one. My favorite part about using natural oils? They smell AMAZING and many have the added benefit of aromatherapy.

Find the Right Moisturizer: Not all moisturizers are created equal. Most brands make a light and a heavier formula depending on the time of year and skin type. Listen to your skin - you may need to go a little lighter in the summer. During the winter, even with an oily t zone, I layer an oil and a moisturizer.

Facials: For me facials are a luxury. Of course it would be great to have one weekly but for most thats not realistic. BUT, I do think there are real benefits to a monthly one. If you're local and interested in a natural and organic experience, Organachs is the ultimate destination. Last month I had the VOYA anti aging restorative facial. During it, hand harvested seaweed from Ireland was placed on my face over a seaweed mask. The leaves detoxify, hydrate, and firm the skin while also helping to stimulate collagen production. I left feeling rehydrated and my skin looked amazing! This facial is definitely on my wish list this Christmas!

It's no secret that I'm a neutrals girl tried and true. Of course I can appreciate a beautiful bold print or a dark floral but a light and monochromatic outfit always makes my heart skip a beat. It makes it so much easier to get dressed in the morning when everything matches. It becomes all about textures.... Like this sweater paired with a silk or lace pant for holiday. I just recently wore this sweater to a holiday party (also have it in gray) with a silk skirt and these flats. The bows make it festive but not so much so that you can't wear it after January.

I went to a casual girls night out at a friend's house last week and wore this outfit. I can't tell you how comfortable it was and at the same time I felt dressed up and festive. When I buy "holiday outfits" its nice to know that I can wear them again and that's definitely an added bonus with this look. These pants would be so pretty with a tucked white tee in the Spring!

Fun Fact: Shooting outfits for the blog is NOT an exact science! With my full time job and two kids its actually quite the contrary. It becomes even trickier in the winter when the sun goes down at 4:30! Long story short the plan was to shoot this look at my house but as I drove home and the sun began to set, I ended up taking a detour and met my photographer in town where she was already shooting. The only problem was I forgot my shoes! Lucky for me Lindsay Madden is pretty stylish behind the lens and she so kindly let me borrow these! Thanks Linds:)

And last but not least...how cute is my hat? Its from one of my favorite local shops, Kirby & Company. If you're local to Fairfield/Westchester county its a MUST see. They have the cutest cafe in the back that serves the most delicious macarons and a chocolate cookie that will blow your mind! Or you can head to their online shop. If you want to shop my hat CLICK HERE it comes in 4 colors and is $38:)

I have been living in these jeans! Lately high wasted is all I want to be in. Maybe its the cropped sweater trend or the fact that I love to do a full or half tuck with my tops...all I know is this pair is so comfortable. LOVE these too. My cardigan is old but I found this similar one and love this one too. When I first saw this blouse from La Vie Rebecca Taylor I immediately thought to myself - you have so many lace neutral tops. BUT this one is a wool gauze blend which I thought made it perfect for the Fall/Winter temperatures (anything to justify another pretty blush blouse!).

SHOP THE POST

I was never really a hat girl until I bought my first one from Hat Attack a couple of years ago. It was similar to this style and I lived in it last Fall/Winter. If you're looking for something to take you from city to country its perfect! I also love this style.

So when I received this one I was super excited. The pom detail is so chic and I love it styled dressy or thrown on with a pair of jeans and a leather jacket. My jacket is Theory from last year but you can shop the whole (similar) look below! Click here for my necklace:)

I bought this skirt a couple of months ago when it was about 90 degrees out in September knowing (hoping) the day would come when I could wear it! I saw it and all my plaid filled days at Ralph Lauren came rushing back to me. I wore it for our family Christmas card shoot a couple of weekends ago and to a luncheon...so fun! JCREW is having a site wide sale and everything is 25% off with code GETSHOPPING. See some of my favorite picks below!
