CASUAL FALL

SHOP THE POST

Happy Tuesday friends! Hope you're having a good week so far. It finally feels like Fall has arrived in Connecticut and I love it! Now if I could only find the time to switch my closet over! I get a ton of styling requests from women looking to create a casual chic "home" look. Outfits that you can wear at home, running errands, picking the kids up, lunch with friends, and still feel dressed for everything in between. Two of my closet staples for all my clients are 1. Cardigan and 2. Silk Camisole. I live in this look and what I like most is it can take me day to night if I have a casual dinner to go to during the week. Want to turn it up a notch? Pair this silk with a darker or black jean, booties, and a statement earring! Shop this look below with some of my top pics:)

GOLDEN WINE

SHOP THE POST

Burgundy is hands down one of my favorite colors for Fall. I think one of the reasons I like it so much is the fact that you can't wear it ever season so when I start to see it in September it feels so fresh and new! I recently asked you guys via Instagram which Lust List colors you wanted featured and wine was the most common answer. I thought of pairing it with black or navy but went with gold because it felt so rich. I had to order this sweater as soon as I found it. When I was looking for navy pieces I also found this one which I may have to get as well. Such a great price and I think I would live in it paired with skirts and jeans.

PS Just bought a pair of these a couple weeks ago and LOVE!! I first bought a gray pair for Frank - he needed a sleek sneaker that looked good with shorts and was comfortable. They're wool but somehow cool in the summer and warm in the winter. GENIUS! Have a look...

OVER THE KNEE

SHOP THE POST

Hey friends! Hope you're having a great weekend:) We took the boys to Stone Barns yesterday for their annual Harvest Fest and it was HOT!!!! I can't remember a time when it was over 80 degrees in October. Makes it a little tough to apple pick in a pretty wool fisherman sweater and riding boots! So unfortunately I wasn't wearing this pretty tonal look and hat but I'm hoping to live in it very soon! What are your thoughts on over-the-knee boots? I think they've become less of a trend and more of a staple and they make an outfit look more dressed. Whats great is almost ever designer is making that style now so they're available at all price points. The ones I'm wearing are Stuart Weitzman (color is no longer available) and although they're a splurge I have to say if you wear them as much as I do they're worth the price tag. Below I included a mini OTK style vs. splurge for you!

  • My sweater is only $65! Love it casual but I will probably also dress it up with darker denim or leather leggings and a pretty earring, I also love this one which is the same price
  • This dress would also look great with OTK boots. Throw it on with a leather jacket and its the perfect Fall look
  • I just ordered this sweater! Comes in 4 colors - can you guess which on I ordered?

BLUSH VEST

I don't know about you but I'm kind of loving this Indian summer. Cool mornings and evenings with warm afternoons in the middle? It's heaven for my wardrobe! I've always wanted to live in San Francisco and I imagine that's what its like there. I call it "leather jacket weather"!

I saw this vest and fell in love. First with the color (duh!) and second I have nothing like it - a modern silhouette but the blush makes it feminine and pretty. I found this one for over 50% off in shearling for all of us East Coast girls and this version in camel that would be great paired back to black, ivory, or denim. I couldn't find an exact steal version but I this faux one for under $100 is fun!

SHOPBOP SALE

Screen Shot 2017-09-27 at 9.41.55 PM.png

So the shopbop sale really is one of Fall's best sales. I can't remember if it was the same last year but this year, merchandise on sale is included too!! If you've been holding out for that perfect pair of booties or a chunky knit sweater, then now is the time! HAPPY SHOPPING:)

  • I've been looking for an everyday suede bootie and this pair is perfect! Loving this one too and the price is great
  • So I bought these pants while I was pregnant and totally guessed on the size (they run a touch small). I just tried them on and they're perfect and will go with everything! We're thinking of heading down to DC for a "Friendsgiving" and they'll be perfect! Also thinking about these for a everyday basic pair
  • This top is an investment piece but I love the texture, color, and its perfect for a night out on the town or dressed down

I LOVE THIS TREND! But....its not really a trend. More of this season's twist on a classic look. After working for Ralph Lauren for 7 years its hard not to love plaid. I had so much fun putting this At Any Age post together. The selection of neutral plaids right now is great and they really do go with everything. I hope you like my selections and the boutique I created below for all ages and at every price! :)

Today feels like Friday! Its been a long week already and I'm heading home right now after three days in Philadelphia with Theory. Lots of exciting things happening this year! SOO happy to see my boys tonight! Its amazing what a couple days away can do:)

I'm a sucker for a flowy style blouse. I think its no secret that I love this brand and their pretty, ethereal style and design. I don't wear a ton of blue (actually I have almost no blue in my closet) but when I saw  this shade and pattern I was sold on its 70's vibe. Note: I've received a few questions about my jeans...they're old but I tagged a very similar pair!

THE UN-LEATHER JACKET

TheGirlGuide-LindsayMaddenPhotography-5.jpg

SHOP THE POST

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend! Frank and I went to a very pretty farm wedding in Suffield, CT and had so much fun! It was our first 24hrs away (alone) since Harrison was born and we definitely enjoyed ourselves! BUT I have to say I was so happy to come home to my sweet boys yesterday:)

Last Fall I was pregnant and in search of a leather jacket that could go with me everywhere - day to night, maternity to non-maternity and I needed a neutral color. When I found this one I was so excited! Not only was it the best silhouette, it was vegan which meant it was basically kid-proof. Over the last year I've worn it over jeans, with dresses, and even took it to a wedding. Ummm did I mention its $95!!

If you're looking for something that's leather the same brand makes this one which is still very reasonable as far as leather jackets go. Also I should note, the jeans, t-shirt, and shoes are all old in this post but I tried linking very similar pieces. My pumps are almost identical!

MODEL OFF DUTY

STEALVSSPLURGE-model.png

I love helping clients re-create their closets with casual chic looks at any price point. I started making these steal vs. splurge posts to show how you really can have any look for less. Although not all bags, shoes, or tops are created equal, having a few investment pieces each season and filling in the rest with affordable gems is what I call the "new" closet.

I've always loved the effortless cool-girl style of supermodels. There is something about a great fitting white t-shirt, jeans, and a boyfriend cardigan that just looks good (being over 6 feet doesn't hurt either!). In the last few years I've really upped my sneaker game. There are so many options out there now and these were my favorite last Fall/Winter. I'm thinking of getting this pair next which are also pricey but I know a they're very comfortable and will hold up. Scroll below to shop this look at every price point!

A HERO SWEATER

TheGirlGuide-LindsayMaddenPhotography-7.jpg

SHOP THE POST

I LOVE short weeks...I can't believe its Wednesday already! I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend (I ended up working for most of it - so many exciting things on the horizon for TGG). I know its not technically Fall yet but we've already had some days in CT that sure feel like it. Is it bad that I'm already dying to whip out all my sweaters and darker denim?

Ever heard of a "Hero" item? Think season must-have thats also a wardrobe staple. I'm loving the sweater trends for Fall. Chunky aran knits with details ranging from fringe, to pom poms, to colored intarsia prints. This sweater has it all!

WEDDING GUEST DRESSES

TheGirlGuide-LindsayMaddenPhotography-14.jpg
TheGirlGuide-LindsayMaddenPhotography-17.jpg

SHOP THE POST

One of the top requests I receive from clients is help shopping for wedding guest dresses. Although the rule "you can't wear white to a wedding" is dated, it still stands true for most brides. Sidenote: we went to a wedding once where all the guests were in ivory and black and it looked AMAZING!!! I'm not opposed to a black dress for a wedding as long as there is texture. Also, lace and sheer accents are key!

So you can't wear black or ivory...what do you do? Personally I don't wear bright, solid colors and I always gravitate towards floral: one - it photographs well, and two - if you choose the right pattern they usually won't go out of style. I instantly fell in love with this one's soft ruffles and ethereal vibe. It can be worn both on and off the shoulder which is also a plus! Looking for personalized help finding the perfect outfit? MY BEAUTY ROUTINE

IMG_9125 2.JPG

Hi there! Welcome to my first beauty post! Since starting The Girl Guide I've received so many questions about my skincare routine. I'm a big fan of the "less is more" approach and I have to admit, it's pretty basic. BUT the key has always been natural ingredients.  I've been using Tata Harper skincare for almost 8 years! She is sort of a pioneer in the organic skincare space. When I met her I was instantly inspired by her story - her step dad was diagnosed with Cancer and when she started to help him "detox" the products he was using, she realized there was nothing 100% natural/organic on the market. I love everything about her line especially the scents of her products, so natural and clean.

About two years ago a discovered JuiceBeauty at Whole Foods. I was looking for an affordable moisturizer to switch things up a bit and I fell in love! You can't beat the prices (my antioxidant moisturizer is $39) and I find it to be really effective during the dry winter months. SO when I heard that one of my favorite websites/brands GOOP was teaming up with Juice Beauty I was super psyched. I bought this discovery set and I'm only about three weeks in but I LOVE it! Especially the face oil!

  • I first tried this face wash when I purchased a Theory x Lola box for International Women's day. It was filled with goodies and one of my favorites was this product. I use it every night (in the morning's I just splash water on my face and re-apply moisturizer). The smell is very clean!
  • I have a thing for face oils....I used to think it was weird - how does applying oil to your face not make you break out? Now that I've been using them for years I'm addicted. I highly recommend this one and this one is my new favorite.
  • The first skincare product I ever switched from mainstream to holistic was my deodorant. I once read an article linking aluminum containing antiperspirants to breast cancer and I immediately switched to an all natural deodorant. Disclaimer: The natural ones are NEVER going to work as well as the chemical ridden ones, BUT thats a trade I'm willing to make! This is my current favorite

MY EVERYDAY LOOK

SHOP THE POST

Happy hump day friends! Hope your week is going well. It's been a warm one on the East Coast! We took the boys to the farm this weekend and had such a great time. There is nothing like being outdoors with animals on a beautiful summer day (and it doesn't hurt that they have the most amazing chocolate chip cookies in the cafe). I always leave Stone Barns feeling such a sense of fulfillment - can't explain it!

I LOVED creating this post. This outfit is me - everyday. I recently bought this field jacket to replace one that I've worn to death for the last 8 years. I love it because its light, washable, and looks great over everything from t-shirts to cashmere sweaters, even over a dress. Also army green is a color that is versatile and I think just works with every hair color/skin tone.

  • My shorts in the pic are old but I found these and these which are similar. If you're not looking for a distressed ripped look, this pair is great.
  • Sandals are also old SORRY (I promise I scoured the Internet to see if they were still around)!! But these are a great alternative.
  • I found my handbag at one of my favorite online boutiques for previously owned luxury bags. Fashionphile is based in Beverly Hills and I use them all time for selling my client's gently used handbags.
  • Fun Fact: I LOVE green tea. I stopped drinking coffee about 6 years ago for health reasons and turned to tea. I don't take any sugar (the grassier tasting the better) and jasmine green is my favorite!!

PRE FALL PICKS

SHOP THE POST

This week's LustList is all about Fall and this pretty wine color that I'm seeing everywhere. It was big last year too which means if you already have it in your wardrobe, bring it back out! I know I know its so hard to think about Fall when the sun is shining and you're hanging out at the beach and in the pool but its right around the corner.

  • These booties are seriously my favorite. I've had them for 6 years and they never get old. They're great with a dress, jeans, skirts, EVERYTHING!
  • I think I may have to get a variation of these sneakers They also come in a non suede version here which may be better for my lifestyle and kid friendly
  • HOW pretty is this sweater?? I love that the material is casual for everyday but still feels feminine with the sleeve detail
  • I just ordered this top to wear under all my thin cashmere open cardigans. How great is the price!!

THE FASHION OF BREASTFEEDING

SHOP THE POST

Any nursing mom has been there. You're in a restaurant thinking, "Ahhh...I did it. The baby is sleeping, my toddler is coloring, I'm going to actually chew this bite of food, sip my wine, and enjoy this moment of peace." Then it happens...the baby starts whaling and you scramble for that bottle of milk you pumped. Within a second your husband reminds you the baby already finished that bottle and you need to whip it out in the restaurant (your breast that is). You look down at yourself and say "Oh no..I'm wearing a dress, a dress with no buttons. I can't tell you how many times I've had to leave a place to either go home, or hide in a car because I wasn't wearing the right "nursing" clothes. I don't mind nursing in public but pulling my dress over my head is where I draw the line!

So if you're a breastfeeding mom you know, getting the job done while still feeling pretty and fashionable can be tough. After many mishaps I thought to myself, 'why can't I do both"? I hope this post helps you accomplish that! I rounded up some of my favorites and as always I'm here to answer any of your questions.  Fun Fact: This year world breastfeeding week is Tuesday, August 1st - Monday, August 7th
