THE SUNDAY SECTION

w h o

PBS - Ten Little Known Black History Facts. As I continue to educate myself, I found PBS to be a great resource for articles and short films like this one.

National Geographic - Remembering ‘Red Summer,’ when white mobs massacred Blacks from Tulsa to D.C.

goop - Understanding Environmental Racism and How to Fight It.

GQ - How to Do More Push Ups in Just Two Weeks!

w o r e

I am SO excited to share that I’ve become a Jenni Kayne Ambassador! This means I’ll be sharing one to two of my favorite pieces each month with you AND you can use my discount code StephanieT20 for 20% off every time you order! Everything Jenni Kayne designs is timelessly classic and effortlessly chic. The quality is incredible and I love knowing that I’m investing in pieces I’ll have for a long time like these mules. I also love this simple style that comes in three colors.

Did you know Jenni Kayne also has a collection for Home? This is one of my favorite coffee table books of all time! It makes the best housewarming gift. I also love this basketweave throw. We’ve had it on our bed but I just moved it to a basket downstairs for the boys to use (pictured above!).

Juneteenth - June 19th may be over but the work we need to do to make it a Federal holiday is not. This website was created specifically to educate people on what Juneteenth means and how to spread the word about its importance in your local community.

watch -There are shows that I put on in the background while working at night and then there are shows that I shut my computer for. Still on the fence about The Order on Netflix but I will say it was tough not to watch (and binge). I love starting a show that has two seasons. Less waiting time! Click here to watch the trailer. I would describe it as Twilight meets Dawson’s Creek.

spray - This is the natural spray I use on our family to combat ticks. We also have our lawn sprayed with a natural oil once a month but the best prevention is still a bath or shower every night along with a tick check!

shop - I recently discovered Trouva, a website that shares 100s of small and independent boutiques across the UK and Europe. I was looking for stockists for a new to me brand called Studio Noos and found their “Teddy Mom Bag” at a boutique in London. Immediately went down a rabbit hole! How lovely is this framed poster for a children’s room?

dress - I wore this dress to the beach the other night and it is perfect! It’s under $100 and selling out quickly so be sure to check it out fast! It runs big (I’m wearing a size 2) and is a lovely light material for summer. The white one is lined!

GARDENING ESSENTIALS AND INSPIRATION

58250dae6aa1107691400d4dc50b4f2a.jpg

Over the last month I’ve taken some time to clear out a little piece of our front yard and turn it into something more. Honestly, I can’t even remember what it looked like last Spring/Summer! It’s amazing all the things we notice now that we’re spending 95% of our time at home. The front of our house is landscaped with boxwoods (they were here when we moved in and have done very well year over year) which I love but for this new spot I wanted something a little more “organic” and natural looking. I LOVE lavender but It is pretty hard to grow on the East Coast so I set out to find something similar that would thrive in our location. After a few weeks of pinning, I was able to piece together the look I wanted and started planting! Today I’m sharing the perennials I planted and the tools I’ve been using the most!

XX

S

FULL SUN PERENNIALS

salvia - I love salvia. it looks very similar to lavender but is much easier to grow. there are many variations but I used blue marble and april night.

lavender - I have found lavender hard to grow and mine didn’t come back this year so i’m trying it out in a pot instead. stay tuned!

sage - I planted russian sage last year and it came back this season and looks great. i love the smell of it and overall sage is very hearty and easy to grow.

grasses - I used ornamental feather reed and switch grass or panicum.

cone flower (I prefer purple) - this is not deer REPELLENT so you will need to spray it. I purchased an organic one from our local garden center which contains things like garlic, egg whites, and cloves.

goopInterpreting Weird and Stressful Dreams. Before having children I struggled with sleep insomnia and falling asleep. After I had Luke they all just went away. For the last five years, once my head hits the pillow, I’m out! But not this past month.

The New York Times - The Joy of Vegan Cooking, 60 Seconds at a Time. I found Tabitha Brown’s instagram account last week and LOVE her. First off, her videos are so great and you can’t help but smile when you hear her voice because it is so calming and happy! Brown is a vegan chef and creates easy to follow and delicious recipes.

National Geographic - What I discovered traveling the world as a Black woman. On a 65-day trip to 32 countries and in wake of devastating loss, a writer finds sisterhood and healing in daring journeys.

rattan chair - I’ve had my eye on this driftwood chair. Its definitely a splurge but because our back yard is too small for an outdoor sitting area (other than the dining table) I think this would be a nice alternative for sitting in the grass and working, reading, hanging out.

clean - I’m going to do a complete post on our front entry makeover on a budget, BUT I have to share this power washer with you. We did our back patio and front walkway and the difference is crazy! I can’t believe I never realized how dirty they were.

recipe - Sick of banana bread? This swirled blueberry lemon thyme cake looks delicious!

watch - If you haven’t already, you need to watch the documentary 13th on Netflix. It is an eyeing opening look at post-slavery America, the 13th amendment, and the loop hole that was used to create a system of mass incarceration and fear.

kid-proof - This mattress topper - we are FINALLY buying a new sofa for the family room (I feel like i’ve said this a million times already) and because its our highest traffic area I’ve been looking for a way to make it more family friendly. I saw “toppers” on sofas when I was in Europe and loved the look.

who

Harper’s Bazaar - Why You Need to Stop Saying "All Lives Matter". “Let me be clear: stating that black lives matter doesn’t insinuate that other lives don’t.” by Rachel Elizabeth Cargle.

Brené Brown - Brené talks to Ibram X. Kendi on How to Be an Antiracist. Kendi is a New York Times bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist and the Director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University.

Marie Claire - These 10 quotes on race and racism are important.

wore

Here a few new-to-me accounts that I followed because I was inspired by their fashion and loved their style:

babba - Babba C Rivera

aurorajames - Aurora James

nycxclothes - Shelcy & Christy

what

jewelry - I LOVE this New York based jewelry company, Oma The Label. They are nearly sold out after their launch yesterday and after one look at the collection, you can see why! These simple gold hoops are PERFECT for everyday wear. I also have had my eye on this “mama” necklace from BYCHARI.

linens - I was so happy to discover this amazing linen brand based in Westchester, NY (a few towns over from where I grew up!). Linoto is a small business and offers customers an incredible assortment from bedding to towels to smaller gifts. I ordered two sets of these linen coasters.

listen - This goop podcast on investigating instead of reacting. “Investigating what’s underneath the rage can help us then articulate—more clearly—our values,” says Rhonda V. Magee, professor of law at the University of San Francisco and author of The Inner Work of Racial Justice

design - If you’re a neutral/minimalist lover like I am you’ll love following designer Kelly-Ann Baptiste from Pure Collected Living. Follow along here. I love this recent post of hers - I’ve been wanting to cut branches for a large vase in our dining room and she just inspired me!

shave - in an effort to be more sustainable, I have been investing in products that last longer or products that offer refills with biodegradable or compostable components. This week I learned about the Oui the People razor - it is an award-winning, made for sensitive skin, AND lasts (a long time). Purchase the razor now and order refills later. No throwing out a plastic one every couple of months.

where

A curated list of brands that I’ve loved for a while and some new to me this week. Support them online:

golde - obsessed with their turmeric cacao blend for a couple of years now. Add it to smoothies or make a latte!

The Koop - New York based. Candles made from coconut and soy wax with recyclable vessels or can be used as a beverage glass after use.

Bolé Road Textiles - Beautiful pillows and blankets. Love this collection of grey and ivory styles.

nom. - Beautiful art made of string fibers and wood. Love this piece.

Tove - An absolutely stunning clothing brand. Follow their gorgeous feed here. Shop the line in the US via Net-A-Porter.

Ebi - Plant-based postpartum care.

Very Lovely Soles - Love these simple black sandals!

WHAT I AM DOING TO BE ACTIVELY ANTI-RACIST

AT HOME

A book for me - I’m not a big reader. I wish I was. Of course I read online and articles on my phone all day long, but I never just sit down with a book. So for me, instead of ordering White Fragility from Amazon with the risk that I wouldn’t read the entire thing, I purchased the audiobook here so I can listen to it (while I’m cooking, driving, walking, etc.). If you are not like me a prefer a physical book, I have found White Fragility in stock HERE.

Books for the boys - Change starts at home with our children. I will continue to have age appropriate conversations with both Luke and Harrison. Click here to read this NPR piece on talking about race with young children.

This is just the start. This is only three days of reading and researching, googling, and listening, clicking, and reflecting. This is only the beginning. It is not enough to be anti-racist, we must be actively anti-racist. The killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery are crimes against humanity. As difficult as it can be to find the right words to say it pales in comparison to the suffering of BIPOC in this country. Today I am committing to these two things:

  1. The Sunday Section - Sharing more books, recipes, podcasts, brands, and small businesses by and owned by BIPOC in this weekly blogpost.

  2. For the rest of 2020 I will make a $50 donation each month to the NAACP and a $50 donation to Black Visions Collective.

Again, this is just the beginning. This is not just about one instagram post or one blog post for me. I’m committed to being an active voice in the fight against racism in America. I hope you’ll join me.

Architectural Digest - A look inside the Hamptons home where Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis spent her summers. It’s for sale.

coffee - How to brew better coffee at home with these steps. We don’t have a traditional coffee maker at home and since Frank is the only one that drinks it we’ve found that a French press makes more sense. In the morning we boil a big pot of water and I use some for tea, and he uses the rest for coffee. I just ordered him this pretty white one for our anniversary…wait that sounds like its more for me haha!

grow - How to regrow romaine from a stem. Being at home for 70 days during a pandemic makes you very resourceful. I try to only go to the grocery store once every two weeks (which is a far cry from what we used to do - probably 4 x a week) which means that once we run out of something, thats it. Things start to get a little dicey in the kitchen around day 10! Something I just started doing was potting our old lettuce. You know, the one that comes with a little bit of dirt and roots at the bottom. Stay tuned and click here for a how-to with romaine.

DF + GF - I have been following a semi dairy and gluten free diet for almost a decade now. Tp read more on what caused this change click to read this post. I was never diagnosed with an allergy to either however eliminating them from my diet changed my life and health dramatically. So, thus began my search for replacement foods, the two biggest being yogurt and the occasional piece of bread (I really enjoy a good chicken salad sandwich!). Well after years of searching, I found both! This coconut yogurt is incredible. It’s low in sugar, creamy, and delicious. This bread it hands down the best GF bread out there. My favorite flavor is the 7 ancient grains.

watch - Normal People on Hulu. We just started watching a couple of nights ago and so far I really like it! Each episode is only 30 minutes long which was surprising at first but makes it even more binge-worthy. If you’ve already watched and love and are wondering if there will be a season 2, read this!

you asked, I answered.

Where can I go for budget bathing suits? I love H&M for stylish styles that won’t break the bank.

How do I style non-denim shorts? My favorite style of non-denim shorts is the paperbag. They’re usually a touch high waisted and flattering on ever body type. Tuck in a fitted t-shirt, wear with a bodysuit, or cotton blouse.

Favorite facial sunscreen? Hands down this one. I also like using this stick for face.

Favorite straw hat? I love this one from Hat Attack. It is an easy fit and the style will work with every face type.

Styling dark clothes for summer? I actually love wearing black in the summer. Look for a feminine dress like this one (less expensive one here) and pair it with brown leather sandals and a straw bag for an elegant summer look!

SPRING STYLE ON A BUDGET

WALMART-under100.png

Achieving great style doesn’t mean you have to break the bank! This Spring, look for staples like this white maxi skirt and this striped t-shirt from Walmart Fashion to update your wardrobe. I love Walmart for their stylish and affordable pieces - most are under $30!

They recently launched their SCOOP line in stores and I can’t get enough of the new pieces for Spring and Summer. I was blown away by every piece that I ordered especially this jumpsuit. It is so incredibly soft and not sheer - the perfect weight for lounging at home or taking the boys for a walk on a nice day.

If you’re looking to update your white denim this season, I love this pair . They’re high-waisted and have just the right amount of stretch. Pair them with these espadrille sneakers for the perfect casual but dressed look! This Spring capsule from Walmart has everything you need to get up and feel good while staying home this season!

a daily walk

I just started going on a daily walk this week and It has been so therapeutic.

gardening

I’ve recently started gardening more and I find it so calming and relaxing. It is something I’ve always wanted to spend more time on but never felt like I had the “time” (aka I didn’t prioritize it). Stay tuned for some before and afters! Love this watering can!

A CUP OF TEA

You all know how much I love tea! The ritual, the taste, the transformation…all of it. Take a moment for yourself and make a cup of tea this weekend. I love loose leaf because it takes more time to make and slows everything down. This heart steeper is one of my favorites and having a few special mugs that you love really helps too!

fancy Friday

I started this last month and it has been my best mood shifter. Friday is actually the toughest day for me to get up and get dressed so this extra motivation has made all of the difference.

FANCY FRIDAY

FANCYFRIDAY1.JPG

Fancy Friday doesn’t mean getting decked out in a ball gown (I mean you can if you want!). Instead think of it as going a little further in your self-care routine for the day. Try putting on something from your closet that you love and haven’t seen in a while. Some of my favorite ideas: a pair of gold hoops and your favorite tee, a maxi dress topped with a cardigan, a statement blouse with your favorite pair of jeans. Love headbands? I’ll take it! Anything to give yourself a little extra pep in your step today:) TRUST ME! It works!

This weekend is a big one for our family - My mom is turning 60 and Harry is turning 3! They both have the same birthday, May 2nd. I’m doing my best trying to maintain a “the show much go on!” mentality and have a few tricks up my sleeve. The weather looks AWESOME and for that I am most grateful. Happy Friday & Happy Weekend to you all!

Am I the only one hoping for a new set of non-stick pans for Mother’s Day? Haha! Thought so….

This Mother’s Day definitely feels different. When I sat down to create this roundup and thought about what I would want this year the first things that came to mind were: a warm bath, new cozy slippers, finally framing a few more pictures of the boys, and flowers (but ones that would last longer than a week!). One thing to note: if you’re shipping to friends or family for Mother’s Day, add at least 3 days to your expected delivery day (so try to order today or tomorrow if you can!). I’ve learned from experience this week and last while ordering for Harrison’s Birthday party. Unfortunately the free ground shipping just isn’t cutting it this year. If you’re ordering from Bloomist use code TGG15 or TGG25 for a discount! Happy Mother’s Day:)

SPRING STYLE WITH SPERRY - 3 SHOES, STYLEd 9 ways

sperryslides1.jpeg

My stay at home style is neutral, classic, and comfortable. One thing that has been helping me every day (besides getting dressed) is getting outside for a walk with the boys. Even if it’s just for 15 minutes, the fresh air has been doing wonders for all of us. You can say its part of my new SAH self-care routine! Whether we’re playing in the yard, having a picnic, or just hanging out, Sperry has every style I need. Today I’m styling three of my favorite footwear styles for Spring: the sneaker, boat shoe, and leather mule. Each style is comfortable, classic, and chic. Something for everyone!

Harper’s Bazaar - Everyone Is Home Right Now, But Who’s Doing All the “Home” Work? I love this recommendation, “If your partner is taking on a task, don't offer to help or make a list. Instead, each person should own their task from start to finish. If you are making dinner, pick the menu, cook it, and get it to the table. If you’re both working from home, consider two-to-four hour shifts of “watching” the kids (i.e.,brainstorming constructive activities, getting materials ready, and carrying out the plan).”

Vogue - Adult acne anyone? If you’ve been breaking out during quarantine, you’re not alone. This week my skin launched a full force attack on me and I started to panic. This article explains why. “Falling off your routine is one big reason why so many people are breaking out right now,” Schaffran elaborates. “But stress is the biggest one”, says dermatologist Robin Schaffran, M.D.

Forbes - New Data Show Air Pollution Drop Around 50 Percent In Some Cities During Coronavirus Lockdown. According to scientists from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, Paris has seen nitrogen dioxide drop by 54 percent, while Madrid, Milan and Rome saw a drop of nearly 50%. So what does this mean for our cities once the lockdown is lifted? Will we work to keep these numbers down?

Town & Country - How Stately Homes Like Downton Abbey’s Highclere Castle Are Coping During the Coronavirus Pandemic. With a skeleton staff, no visitors, and hundreds of rooms to look after, being lady of manor during a pandemic is harder than you might think.

design - The indoor/outdoor rug in our kitchen. We’ve had this rug for a couple of years now and it still looks like new. The label recommends that you hose it down to clean but I wash it in our machine every two weeks (no dryer) and haven’t had any issues. Another most asked about rug in our house? The one in our living room! I can’t recommend it enough. It is extremely soft and because it’s a wool/sisal mix you can also easily remove stains. Our color is the “light grey”. I originally found it on Amazon three years ago when we first moved in! I can’t believe its been so long.

make - If you can get your hands on a whole chicken, this recipe is incredible. I added potatoes and used half of the butter and it was so delicious!

listen - “How to Manage Money through a Crisis” in a special goop podcast with Ellevest founder and Wall Street powerhouse, Sallie Krawcheck. Some of my biggest takeaways from Sallie: It’s not about timing the market it’s about time in the market. Your financial situation needs to be secure but if you can take a long term perspective, now is the time to invest. Women tend to be better investors because we take the long game and don’t look as much.

art - Just before the holidays I walked into a small home boutique in Soho, NY and fell in love. Everything perfectly curated and beautiful, it was like I had dreamed it up. Then I saw they had Maman Freres loose leaf tea and I knew I had found my place. French is another example of a small business being hit hard by the pandemic. Their original store is in Calabasas, CA and the NY location was only 6 months old before shutting down. The framed Antoinette Poisson print pictured above was purchased at French. Every day I pass it and still love it as much as the moment I saw it (sounds so romantic, right? HAHA). Click here to send French a note about purchasing one:)

notebook - WFH style. I don’t have an office or even a desk at home so most of my work is done from our dining room table. After months of searching I finally found a notebook and calendar that fits my workflow and style! Love everything from Appointed. They just launched the “district notepad” that directly helps local DC families.

the people who have shaped my style

MM

The tapestry that hangs in our living room is one of my most cherished possessions. I’ve only ever seen a handful of her photos and pieced together a few stories over the years, but still somehow she has shaped who I am today. She was a creative, loved painting, nature, and animals, I’ve always tried to link myself to her throughout the years, draw on our similarities, and use them to write the story of “where I cam from”. She died at the young age of 36 but she still lives on in me and in my home every day. In my head I refer to her as MM (her maiden initials on a pinky ring of hers that I wear) because it feels strange to use the title of Grandmother for a woman who will forever be in her 30’s. I’ve heard stories of how she had a mini breakdown finishing this tapestry. If only she knew how much it would be cherished one day, 70 years later, and an ocean away.
