OUTDOOR DINING

OUTDOORDINING-thegirlguide.png

This past Friday the weather in Connecticut was BEAUTIFUL! At almost 70 degrees and sunny, my attention was immediately drawn to the patio in our backyard. We bought this outdoor farm table from Terrain nearly three years ago as a floor sample and decided to hold off on chairs because of the hefty price tags. Ever since then we’ve been using canvas folding chairs (that you would take to a sporting event LOL) and occasionally I’ll bring out our dining chairs from inside for formal dinners (like Easter Sunday two years ago). With all of this extra time being spent at home for the foreseeable future, I’m ready to make a purchase. In the land of no budgets I would get these. I love the chippendale look and they are the same wood as our table, a gray teak after some weathering. However, back to reality and I would love to get 6 chairs for under $800 if possible. On Friday night I asked for chair recommendations via IG stories and a follower sent me these. She sent me a pic of her set IRL and they look really great (the oatmeal colored cushion was more of a grayish white). I’m thinking of ordering them this week to see them in person and possibly these. Can’t wait for more warm weather AND one day having friends and family over again for dinner!

TROTTA HOUSE: OUR LIVING ROOM AND DINING ROOM

StephanieTrottaTheGirlGuide-AtHome

Decorating a small space can be just as difficult as a big one. This summer it will be three years that we’ve lived in our home. If I have one piece of advice it is to take your time! There is no rush. Don’t just buy pieces because you need to, collect them. Of course there are places where you won’t be able to wait as long but overall I’m happy that the Trotta House is a work in progress and I still love everything we bought 3 years ago. Here are some other tips for decorating in smaller spaces:

Neutrals- I love a neutral wardrobe and styling my home is no different. Having a monochromatic palette helps to create a calm space and will also make it appear bigger.

Storage - one of the hardest parts of of having a small room is storage….where do I put all my stuff?? We love using these belly baskets throughout our home making it easy to tidy up quickly. baskets are also great for storing extra pillows and blankets.

Texture - When styling with neutrals, texture is key. I love incorporating this element by adding linen or wool throw pillows like this one.

Nature - bringing natural elements like plants and flowers into a space is really important. It creates warmth and good energy. This can be as simple as spending less than $10 a week on grocery store fillers. They’re my favorite! Invest in vases and vessels that feel like art for a styled look.

scent - first impression when you walk into room…the look and the smell! I always have our diffuser on or will light a candle if i’m going to be in the space for a while. This scent is one of my favorites because it’s very light and also non-toxic.

Accessories can really make a space. Using items like trays, objects, and books, are essential to creating a warm and cozy environment. I discovered Bloomist about a year ago and fell in love with everything! So when I was ready to start styling our space I knew I wanted to work with them and IMMEDIATELY reached out. Not only does their neutral aesthetic align with my own, their ethos and commitment to sustainability are unique in this space and an inspiration. They work mostly with small artisans which means when you purchase from bloomist you are supporting two small businesses. Today I’m so excited to offer a special discount for my followers. Use code TGG15 to receive 15% off your order or TGG25 for $25 off a $100 order.

I get so many questions about the francoise Picasso print hanging in our living room. It was a gift from Ralph Lauren when I worked there and was given to me as a print that I later had it framed. She still makes me happy every time I see her.

TROTTA HOUSE - the boy's bathroom

July2Stephanie-5.jpg

I’m so excited to share this peek inside the boy’s bathroom! We recently received this towel starter pack from weezie towels and its amazing the impact it made! All of our bathrooms are from the 1980’s and I couldn’t believe the first time I walked through the house and saw a gray toilet and bathtub! Of all the old-fashioned colors they could have been! It sealed the deal for me:)

TROTTA HOUSE - PAINT COLORS

AC013D70-9A56-4D5F-8F19-DF727E898F62.JPG

PAINT! Long before we purchased this house I was on the hunt for the perfect palette. I knew what I wanted - a clean and fresh feeling home painted in white, with a gray door. I googled, I pinned, I DM’d bloggers and designers…so much thought and research went into finding the one! Then when we found our home I knew my plan was perfect. With just shy of 2,000 sq ft, white was the only way to make our new space appear bigger. After a few samples I decided on Simply White for the walls and Chantilly Lace in a gloss for the trim. What attracted me to the trim color was that it was slightly creamy and had just the slightest contrast to the walls.

Not all grays are created equal. SO SO many gray colors. It can be very overwhelming and the pressure to not make a mistake is real! I knew I wanted a high gloss look for both our front door and for our family room bookcases.

WEEKEND RECAP + DESIGN INSPIRATION

SATURDAY CITY DAY WITH LUKE AT ABC CARPET & HOME

When we moved into our house two years ago I had a vision. In the blink of an eye I had completed our foyer (wallpaper, light fixture, painted trim, and upholstered our window seat bench). We stripped and re-finished the floors in the living room/dining room, decorated a little, and then…I was stumped! All the other projects were bigger, more costly, and overwhelming. Now after two years of living in our house I’m ready to pick it up again. On the list: finish the boys rooms, update the kitchen and first floor powder room, add more furniture here and there. Oh and we need new windows, HAHA! See, I told you it was overwhelming! We are trying to do the smaller projects on our own if possible (Frank started painting the bedroom hallway this weekend) so we can splurge a little on other things.

Do you pin? Recently, I’ve been spending a lot more time on Pinterest . Its really helping me hone in on what I want our home to look like and its also been a very helpful tool for conveying my vision to Frank and designer friends helping me. A few years ago I stumbled on this home makeover and it really stuck with me. I keep going back to it and now it’s become my main source of inspiration for our living room. I really went through a phase where I was uninterested in anything home related and now that I’ve experienced a spark I’m so excited to get moving! Stay tuned and follow along! I’ll be sharing updates with you via the new β€œAT HOME” tab on the blog under β€œLIFE”.

DIY: how to reuse your glass candle jar

Oct10Stephanie-1.jpg

I recently posted a picture of my bathroom cabinet and received so many messages about this repurposed candle glass for my makeup and q-tips. I’m not a huge DIY kind of girl but every once in a while I surprise myself! This one is super easy and would also look great on a nightstand, desk, or in your closet. I love repurposing glass and I always feel bad throwing it away. We’ve been using this jelly for years and I have about 20 glasses now that we use for drinking and also for the kids crayons, pens, etc. Stay turned for pics of how we use those in our playroom:)

step one

burn your amazing diptyque candle (you can use anything for this but these are my favorite aesthetically and love all the scents!)

step two

once you have burned down the candle as much as possible, scrape the remaining wax out with a bread knife. Most of it should just pop out!

step three

for the remaining wax, place the jar in the microwave for 10 seconds and wipe out with a paper towel or old towel. Repeat as needed

step four

rinse the glass with warm water and soap, et voila!

THE CANDLE

HOME SWEET HOME

JuliaDags_7-9_Stephanie-93.jpg

I started decorating this room in my head three years ago - a year before we found our home. I always knew I wanted a white linen sofa and I found this one on my favorite home decor site, One Kings Lane. Ours is no longer available but here is this similar style. People always ask me how I keep our sofa clean with two little boys...the short story is this room is a food free zone but as we all know accidents happen. I felt better about getting an off white linen know it was a slip cover. Luckily I haven't had to strip the whole thing yet but for spot treatments I swear by this enzyme cleaner. It really works on EVERYTHING not just pet stains.

  • I fell in love with this polished nickel lantern for our foyer - we've had it for 2 years now and it still looks pristine!

  • I found these cane back chairs for under $150. Love the Scandinavian feel of the grey washed wood and eventually I want to move them to another room in the house and replace with custom upholstered chairs (add that to my long decor wishlist).

  • Semi-home related: I treated myself to this diffuser on a recent trip to Sag Harbor and I LOVE it. Sounds silly but every time I put it on it brings me joy. Luke recently started asking me to put it in his room at night. The same brand also makes the loveliest oils - we've been defusing Pacific!
